The beauty of a still life isn't in making ordinary objects look extraordinary—it's in finding the extraordinary that was already there. Three lemons arranged with deliberate casualness, their surfaces catching light in ways that reveal texture, form, and the quiet drama of simple geometry.

This painting began as an exercise in color temperature and evolved into something more interesting. Lemons aren't just yellow—they're warm yellow where the light hits direct, cooler yellow-green in the shadows, with reflected light bouncing purple and orange into the darker passages. The challenge was keeping each color note pure while building the form convincingly.

The composition plays with the tension between organic curves and architectural lines. The lemons' natural roundness contrasts with the sharp edges of the table surface and background elements, creating a visual conversation between nature's softness and human-made precision. It's a classic still life setup, but painted with contemporary directness.

Working alla prima—wet paint into wet paint—keeps the surface lively and prevents the overworking that can kill the freshness in still life painting. Each brushstroke had to count. The palette knife work in the background provides textural contrast to the smoother modeling of the fruit forms.

This piece continues my exploration of how light defines form, but within the controlled environment of the studio rather than the changing conditions of plein air work. In still life, you control the light, which lets you push color relationships further and explore subtleties that outdoor painting doesn't allow time for.
