Corner Store

The last light on the block, and somebody's still got somewhere to be.

Corner Store is a night painting — a brick corner building gone almost black against the sky, except for the shop at street level, glowing amber and gold like it's the only thing awake. A lone figure walks past the bright doorway, a couple of upstairs windows burn orange, and a parked car's headlights catch the edge of the frame. The paint is loose and warm, all deep umbers and near-blacks broken open by that hot, buttery light spilling onto the sidewalk. Quiet, a little lonely, and completely familiar.
